ThiefAware is a simple digital surveillance program. ThiefAware uses a video capture device, such as a webcam, to monitor the scene for motion. When it detects something moving it starts recording. By default, ThiefAware records for a minute before checking for more motion, if there is still something moving it continues recording for another minute at which point it again checks for more motion. You can review the footage at any time with the easy to use review mode, which also allows you to save individual frames as picture files, and optionally date and time stamp them. You never have to worry about running out of hard drive space. You can limit ThiefAware's hard drive space usage to any value you like. Old footage is automatically deleted when hard drive space runs out.
You will need a PC running Windows 98 or higher, preferably Windows 2000 or XP. I have not tested ThiefAware with Vista as I do not have a copy and cannot afford to buy it. If you would like to try ThiefAware under Vista it will probably work. You will need a video capture device to run ThiefAware. The simplest solution is a webcam. These small digital cameras are cheap and readily available. They plug into you USB port, which can be found on most modern PCs. Another option is an analog capture card and an analog security camera. This setup is more expensive as you need the analog capture card as well as the camera, and also more difficult to set up. You will also need plenty of free hard drive space. I recommend at least 30GB free space, although more would be better. ThiefAware automatically deletes old footage when it starts running out of hard drive space, so the more hard drive space you have, the longer the footage will be kept.
